There’s a storm outside. I absolutely love thunderstorms. I’ve loved them my whole life. When I was 6, we moved to a ‘farmhouse’ on 17 acres of land and the ‘house’ had a tin roof (I’ll address why I’ve used italics later… there are quite some stories that go along with those italics). The sound of rain on that tin roof is so soothing and since we live in Florida, the rain was usually accompanied by lightning.
So, that house? Well… the previous owner had driven a single-wide trailer onto the land, situated it in a random angle and then started building around it. Imagine a trailer and then a rectangular house being build around and over it. Most of the house had vaulted ceilings, then the center of the home had a trailer’s ceiling. My father wanted the land and my parents thought they could renovate the house to suit their needs.
Why did my dad want the land? Straight out of college (my parents married his last year of school), my dad received 3 offers for mechanical engineer. He picked the worst paying job in Florida because… he liked tropical plants. He really loves plants. Ten years later, he can afford to move to some property and satisfy that desire, plus the farming desire (haha), his love of projects (of which he almost never finishes), and annoy my mom all at once.
My mom comes from a military family, very strict, very clean. My dad is TOO laid back. We lived in a weird home (they did renovate, basically extracting the trailer from the inside of the home and adding a kitchen and better bathrooms) and we were surrounded by dirt. Vacuuming and mopping could not keep up. But, I loved my childhood. Ask another sibling and you will get a different answer.
I got to do things like… when I was about 10, someone gave us an orphaned baby goat. I had a pack-n-play set up in my bedroom and I set my alarm to get up every 2 hours to feed him. I took the pack-n-play outside every day to wash out the poop and pee. Somehow, motherhood was no surprise! I also raised a few calves from infancy. When I was a teenager, my dad bought me a milk cow.
I don’t even know how to supply my kids a childhood like that! I won’t even buy them a puppy. Hmmm. Well, I’m hungry. 3 kids at school and 1 down for a nap, it’s lunchtime! I will do a health update later :)
